Where to stay near Plage Sud in Lacanau Océan?
Plage Sud is our beach. It is 200 metres from the gîtes, at the end of a sandy path through the pines, and you are on it in three minutes with a towel over your shoulder. We built our five wooden cabins here, in the route du Lion neighbourhood, because it is the quietest part of Lacanau Océan: no shopping street, no late terraces, the ocean behind the dune. Sleeping in the pines, the ocean three minutes away.
Three minutes, in flip-flops. You leave 43 route du Lion with your towel, follow the path through the pines, and come out on the dune. No car to take out, no parking to find, no timetable.
The quietest neighbourhood in the resort. The background noise here is the ocean. The buzz of the centre, its restaurants and its market stay ten minutes away by bike, exactly where you want them.

South of the resort, between route du Lion and the dune.
There are two Lacanau Océans. The first is the seafront: the central beach, the ice-cream parlours, the surf shops, the summer evenings that run late. The second begins a kilometre further south, where route du Lion runs into the pines and tarmac gives way to sand. Plage Sud is at the end of it: no concrete, no sea wall, a long curve of sand backed by the dune, with the forest behind. It is the most natural beach in the resort, and the least crowded in summer.
The neighbourhood around it lives at the pace of the pines. You sleep with the window open, walk to the water, and keep the centre ten minutes away by bike along shaded paths, for the evenings when you feel like company. It is the neighbourhood we chose to live in, and for our gîtes.
For whom? Couples, surfers, people who come without a car, people working remotely with the pine forest for a view, and anyone who likes to walk for an hour on the sand without meeting a soul, off season.
Three minutes of sand and pines.
The path starts almost at the terrace. Sand, pine roots, the smell of resin on a hot day, and at the end the dune opening suddenly onto the Atlantic. Three minutes, watch in hand. In July and August a lifeguard post watches over the swimming and a marked area shows where to swim. The rest of the year nobody is watching: the beach becomes a place for walking and photographs, often almost empty, and you stay out of the water on big-swell days.
In summer the sun sets between 9 pm and 10 pm, and Plage Sud faces west. Bring a light jumper; the aperitif is taken on the sand. Back at the gîte, the walk-in shower rinses off the salt, the terrace dries towels and wetsuits, and you eat outside to the sound of the waves.

L'Écureuil, La Forestière, Djah Point, Le Lion and Le Pharaon: five wooden cabins of 35 m², each with its colour, its terrace and its door onto the garden. They sleep two people only, and that is deliberate: a real bed, a real kitchen, a walk-in shower, and nobody above or below you.
Around them, the flowered garden, the koi pond and its waterfall, a washing machine in the shared laundry room, secure parking and, as an option, a 22 kW charging point for electric cars. Surf at the door. Surf Kalani is at 62 route du Lion, 300 metres from us, with direct access to Plage Sud. Cheeky Family, 500 metres along the same road, is a surf school, a surf camp, yoga classes and a guinguette. Our guests get discounts at both. Morning coffee, dinner facing the ocean. The Rainbow Café, 350 metres away, has a wooden terrace where many of our guests get into the habit of brunch. The centre, the market and the lake, by bike. Ten minutes of cycle path to the centre of Lacanau Océan and its Wednesday market, twelve to the lake and Le Moutchic, on a flat path along the forest. The Médoc cycle network starts almost at the door, which is what makes a car-free stay so easy here.
When to come and stay near Plage Sud.
July and August: the beach is lifeguarded, everything is open, everything is full, and you book several months ahead. June and September: our answer when people ask for the best time, with an ocean still warm in September and a beach that empties as soon as the schools go back. From April to November the schools on route du Lion give lessons. And in winter, Plage Sud becomes an enormous walking ground for two, with a well-heated gîte to come home to.

How far are the gîtes from Plage Sud?
About 200 metres. You leave 43 route du Lion with your towel, cross the pines on a sandy path, and three minutes later your feet are in the water. No car, no parking.
Is Plage Sud a lifeguarded beach?
In July and August, yes: a lifeguard post and a marked swimming area. The rest of the year nobody is watching. We stay out on big-swell days, keep an eye on the children, and go and swim in the lake when the ocean is too rough.
Do you need a car to stay near Plage Sud?
No, and most of our guests who arrive by car never take it out again. The beach on foot, the centre in ten minutes by bike, the lake in twelve. From Bordeaux: the train to Saint-Jean, then bus 421 or Yoann, our partner driver. If you do come by car, it sleeps in our secure car park, with an optional 22 kW charging point.
Is the neighbourhood noisy in summer?
No. There is no shopping street here and no late terraces; the background noise is the ocean behind the dune. When you want some life, it is ten minutes away by bike in the centre, and you come home to sleep in the quiet.
Can a beginner learn to surf at Plage Sud?
